Product: General Feedback

Post general feedback about Sitecore here. Projects that require particular focus or have a deadline might have their own feedback forum.

  1. Allow Sitecore to be configured to use an out of process caching tool for it's internal caching (data caching, item caching, etc)

I would like to see the current internal caching mechanisms to be refactored to one that uses a "provider" based approach. This would allow Sitecore to be configured to cache some or all of it's data using Memcached, Redis, or a custom hybrid in-memory/out of process implementation.

  2. Copy and Duplicate should update datasources and links to copied items

One common way of structuring data in the content tree is to put the component datasources in a folder directly beneath the item (e.g. in a /pagedata folder).

When copying or duplicating an item the new copy of the item still has the datasource point back to the original item. This is confusing for content editors, who go ahead and edit the content only to find it has changed on the original page as well.

At best, the editors have to open the new copy and change all the components on the page to point to the new datasources, which…

  3. Additional Include File location for user defined overrides

The Includes folder is getting cluttered with all the additional Sitecore configs, and now with the addition of Z.SwitchToMaster we are having to prepend more and more Z's to our own folder.

I propose the addition of a new folder location, /App_Config/Overrides, which will patch in last and allow for project defined patches to be placed, keeping default Sitecore configurations separate. This is a simple one line addition to LoadAutoIncludeFiles() located in Sitecore.Configuration.Factory class.

  4. Always save standard values rendering field as a delta of its base template rendering field

By default, Sitecore doesn't support rendering inheritance for templates standard value items.

Scenario: TemplateA has a standard values items with presentation details defined ("__renderings" field defined). I create a templateB inheriting templateA. By default, templateB "__renderings" field is empty, so its inheriting templateA rendering. If I change templateB presentation details, Sitecore copies templateA "__rendetings" field value, apply changes to it, and saves the result in templateB "__renderings" field. By doing so, Sitecore is breaking the rendering inheritance. From now on, any change to templateA presentation details won't be reflected in templateB.

A simple solution exists and is already used at…

  5. Allow a developer to extend SXA by reference the SXA nuget packages

As a developer i want to reference
a sxa nuget package so that i can
create my own rendering variants based on sxa

As a developer i want to reference
a sxa nuget package so that i can
extend my own feature or foundation based on sxa

The SXA nuget packages are missing on the sitecore nuget repository

  6. Dynamic Placeholders

Most of the time components(such as a tabbed view) would require to have the same type of placeholders set in it for multiple times. Most of the time we create custom functionality to programmatically connect a single Placeholder Setting Item to all instances of the named Dynamic Placeholder that appear on any page, regardless of quantity.

  7. Re-Index Tree for Single index

The developer tab in Content Editor allows you to 'Re-Index Tree'. that's good, but it applies to all indexes. I'd like the ability to re-index the tree for a single index.

  8. Datasource Location and Datasource Template fields should be stored as GUID types

The Datasource Location and Datasource Template fields on View Renderings, Controllers and Sublayouts are currently "Datasource" and "Internal Link" type fields currently, which is stored a string path and not a GUID.

This leads to issues if the folders are moved around or templates are re-organised after having set these values. It breaks functionality in the Experience Editor when adding a component and the Select Datasource wizard throws an error/does not open.

It's a lot of work to go through all the components and change these manually to the new location rather than these fields following best practice and using…

  9. Sitecore.Logging: Update the Log4Net code or use official Log4Net releases

Sitecore took the Log4Net code at some point in the distant past. Many new features have been added to Log4Net since then
There is a more compelling reason for updating, and that is there are many third party Logging Providers (e.g. Raygun) that have out of the box appenders for Log4Net

  10. Language configuration for SXA

SXA should (optional) know the intent languages of the site, for improving the experience for editors with Language warnings like https://github.com/jbluemink/Sitecore-Language-Editor-Warning know the intent languages can also help for SEO meta data, sitemap.xml, language switches and things like that.

  11. Manage redirects in Sitecore

Managing redirects is a task any public site requires, but there is no method out of the box with Sitecore to do this.

Instead modules like IIS URL rewrite modules can be used, but this requires developer involvement to deploy config files containing the redirects. This isn't particularly practical when a content edited wants to unpublish a page and create a redirect at the same time.

As the number of redirects on a site can now typically go into the thousands, any solution would also require the ability to upload a CSV. Due to the number of redirects they should…

  12. returnUrl=%2Fsitecore%2Flogin

    Hi Team,

You would have gone through this but worth asking this now

Even with valid authentication, user would end up in same login page when you hit the below URL.

    http://<yoursite>/sitecore/login?returnUrl=%2Fsitecore%2Flogin

I can understand the querystring which is being executed after the valid authentication but as an user i would expect to login once my authentication was successful at first instance.

Can we have a mechanism to stop this behavior by any means ?
i.e. stop redirecting to login when user is authenticated + ReturnURL is login

  13. Mass Item Manipulation

Many editors have the hard job to manipulate lots of content items and usually copy them, delete them or move them around. As this is usually a "item-by-item" thing, it is not possible to automate the job with a script and everything needs to be sorted out manually. An option to select more items at once and perform on them the move/delete/copy operations would solve the problem (e.g. by adding checkboxes or allowing to ctrl select the items).

  14. Images Optimization

I would like to have in the media library some builtin functionality for Image optimization (Jpg, png compression etc) In regard Jpg, would be great if you can transform the jpeg as a progressive jpeg in case it is not. It would also great to have some functionalities to resize the images in case the images are too big. There are already modules that do these, but it would be great to have it as part of the product

  15. Provide free production licence for partners to use for their corporate website

Allow Sitecore partners to use Sitecore to run their corporate websites, at no cost. This would encourage experimentation and provide good internal training opportunities for partners and allow staff "on the bench" to develop new features. AKA eating our own dogfood.

  16. Change field Source Calculation to use Pipelines for fields that support "Source"

If developers were able to tap into and potentially customize the logic for setting the source of an image field, reference field, multi-list field, link field, etc. then much more powerful site-resolving field source logic could be written, as well as other customizations. This is especially important for media/image fields.

The most common use-case I can think of is for multi-site or multi-tenant solutions. The number of templates for these solutions typically increases when fields are given specific sources. This issue is typically mitigated by either making non-specific sources (reducing the quality of the UX in the Sitecore Client), using…

  17. Native support for SolrCloud

Since Solr is critical to a horizontally scaled Sitecore environment, it would be really great if the SolrCloud was supported.

  18. Update the Icons provided out of the box

The icons provided are quite out of date and also don't provide many relevant options for use with modern components etc. In Sitecore training we are taught to use icons for differentiating between components but this is often difficult with limited options, especially the folder icons as there are not many different ones.

For example common components are things like:

    - Carousel
    - Hero
    - Promo
    - CTA
    - Accordion
    - Testimonial
    - Callout
    - Image with text

For quite a few of the above It's hard to find an good icon. It would be great if there was a…

  19. Add "uploadMediaStream" pipeline

The "getMediaStream" pipeline is usefull only when you request media from sitecore.
There should be pipeline where you can manipulate stream that is uploaded to sitecore, like resize image or compress image.
I created something like that for my own needs but I think that it should be part of the platform.
